Dilation and Curettage

A dilation and curettage is a procedure used to obtain a biopsy of the uterine lining (endometrium). The cervix is dilated, and an instrument is placed inside the uterine cavity to obtain tissue from the uterine walls. This tissue is then sent to pathology to examine it for any problems.

The most common reason for this procedure is abnormal uterine bleeding, peri/postmenopausal bleeding, miscarriage, infertility workup and to rule out a problem prior to performing an endometrial ablation. When a D&C is used for miscarriage, a gentle suction is usually used to remove any pregnancy tissue. This is called a suction D&C.

Recovery from a D&C is usually very quick. Most patients return to normal activities the following day. Sometimes patients will have some bleeding and cramping post procedure so Ibuprofen may be helpful.
